How Flora@Home protects thousands of plants against frost damage during winter time
Flora@Home explores insulation strategies for safe winter shipping

Cold-sensitive plants and the challenge of winter logistics
Flora@Home – a fulfilment company shipping houseplants for B2C webshops across Europe – regularly faces the challenge of protecting plants against cold damage during winter.
“When temperatures dip below 10°C, some varieties – especially delicate ones like Alocasia – can suffer. They may look fine on delivery, but once in a warm living room, the damage becomes visible,” says Jesse from Flora@Home. “That leads to customer complaints, refund requests, and a lot of extra handling for us.”
Testing solutions with Inter Fresh Concepts
To tackle this issue, Flora@Home teamed up with Inter Fresh Concepts in 2023. The goal was to find a reliable way to insulate plant shipments against the cold. Together, the teams ran extensive lab and field tests, including deliveries to extreme cold regions like the north of Sweden and Finland.
The tested solution combined heatpacks with specially designed insulating liners that trap warmth inside the box while blocking out cold air. “The lab results were promising,” Jesse explains. “In all cases, internal box temperatures stayed well above freezing, even during outdoor exposure in sub-zero conditions.”
Implementation challenges: cost and complexity
Despite the success in controlled tests, Flora@Home has not yet fully integrated this solution into its day-to-day shipping process. “With over 140 different box formats, the handling required for liners proved too complex and time-consuming,” Jesse says. “We’re now working on standardising our packaging, which could make future integration of these liners much more feasible.”
In the meantime, Flora@Home has experimented with other materials, such as radiator foil and bubble wrap. “But those alternatives haven’t performed as well,” Jesse notes. “Plus, our customers are increasingly critical of plastic-heavy packaging.”

A partnership built on transparency and problem-solving
Although only the heatpacks are in use yet, Jesse highlights the value of the collaboration: “Inter Fresh Concepts has been hands-on, transparent, and practical. They really took the time to understand our process and help us test what could work best.”
Looking ahead: toward smarter cold protection
Flora@Home continues to explore how best to balance protection, sustainability, and efficiency in winter packaging. As their box formats are being streamlined, the climaliner solution developed with Inter Fresh Concepts may yet become a standard part of their winter logistics.
